A Birthday Love Bird

Here's the big reveal of the birthday gift I made for Mom this year.  Her birthday was last Friday and of course this gift arrived much later.  After Mom said that she really liked the Valentine's card that I sent them this year, I thought that maybe I'd be able to duplicate it in embroidery.  So I hope that she actually liked the design as much as she said.  :)  This was really my first venture into embroidery and I have to say that I'm pretty happy with the results.  I used a little book from Hobby Lobby to learn the various stitches, and Joe rigged up a little tracing table for me by simply placing a lamp under a glass top end table that we have.  Its a good thing I have him around to think of those things for me.  :)  I took a little bit of creative freedom and adjusted the design to make it simpler.  Here's the card that was the inspiration:

 And here's my final product:

I definitely think I'll try more embroidery projects but I may wait a while.  They seem to take a little to long to get to the finished product, and that's just not good for an impatient person like me.  I need projects with more instant gratification :)

  1. Wow, great job! I don't have the patience for projects like that, but I love the way they look! Can't believe it was your first attempt!

  3. This is very cool...although I know it's time-consuming like you said. Did you mainly use backstitch and French knot? My mom used to buy me the little kits and stuff from Michaels...cross-stitch and all that. I absolutely love the design--I'm sure Mama R loves it too.

  4. Thanks everyone!

Chase - the stitches I used were:

Backstitch - flower pot, "LOVE", stem & leaves, and the 2 little bird feathers on top
French Knots - All the little dots in the feathers
Couching - The long tail feathers
Chain stitch - the flower that he's standing on
Satin stitch - the hat, and filling in the wide part on his back feather
The actual bird body was someother kind of stitch that was like a spiral, but I don't remember what it was called. I think that's all of them!

  5. You did a great job Lisa! Seeing your project makes me want to get back to some needlework but I have other projects I need to finish first. We are all enjoying your blog so keep them coming!
