One Year Blog Birthday!

It's finally the weekend! This has been a long week and as usual I'm afraid it's going to be a quick weekend. For today though, I'm going to celebrate the fact that I actually kept up with (and thoroughly enjoyed) writing this blog over the past year. When I sent out my first post a year ago today, I wasn't sure if people would read it, if I'd find enough to write about, or even if I'd be able to keep it up. Thanks to all of you who read this and give me positive feed back, I was encouraged to keep going. I really love when I hear that someone actually tried a recipe or project that I post on here and it has been so great to keep up with you all through this blog.

I try not to focus too much looking at my blog "stats", but it is fun to see how many people read the blog. Typically it's a pretty modest number, but last October that number really exploded when those Halloween wine bottles I made went crazy on Pinterest. Since then I've had many more views on the blog, but most of them are just for the wine bottles :)

You may have noticed that I post a lot of baked goods and sweets on here. That's because they're my favorite things to make AND eat! The problem is that I do eat them and I eat too much of them. I really wish I could share some of these things with you all, but logistically, it's kinda difficult. Instead I thought I would put a few of my favorite baking tools/utensils (new ones of course) together into a little prize for one of you. Consider it a birthday present from the blog :) Now I couldn't give you my absolute favorite kitchen tool which is my KitchenAid mixer, but maybe one day. The things that I do have to give away are:

- A Silpat baking mat - This will fit on a jellyroll size pan and is completely non-stick. It's great for cookies, breads and anything else you might bake, and it keeps you from having to waste parchment paper or grease the cookie sheet.
- A bench scraper - I use this to transfer chopped veggies from a cutting board to a pot, cut dough up into pieces, smooth the sides of cakes and who knows what else. It really is very useful.
- A pair of mini spatulas - I have a similar set to these and use them almost every day! They're great for scraping out small measuring cups that you can't fit a regular spatula in. They also scrape out jars and cans that aren't wide enough for other scrapers. And they're better than using spoons because they have nice flexible sides that make sure nothing is missed.
- Grease proof cupcake papers - These I really just wanted to throw in because they're fun. But the really great thing about them is that they are "grease proof" which means that they'll maintain their bright colors even after something is baked in them.

Well, that's all I have for you! haha. All you have to do is leave a comment below letting me know what you'd make first if you won this :) I'll leave this open for a few days so everyone who wants to has time to enter. The winner will be picked on Tuesday. This weekend before the Super Bowl I'm hoping to finally post about that special cake that I mentioned a couple posts back. I actually forgot to take pictures of it, but I'm making a similar cake for tomorrow, so I'll be sure to get pictures of that. Thank you again to every single one of you who actually reads this! You make it fun for me :) I hope you all have a great weekend, talk to you later!

  1. Lisa, I enjoy reading your blogs, & seeing all the cakes, goodies, & DIY's you do. Thanks for doing it for all of us to read. I'm sure I'd use all of these things if I were to win, but since I won the Halloween bottles, I figure it's someone elses turn. LOL.
    Love ya,

  2. Lisa, I always look forward to hearing Mom say, "Hey, there's a new blog up!" and just to learn what new project you've undertaken or beautiful and delectible new cake you've created. Thanks for helping to make us more creative, jealous of the energy you bring to all you do, for keeping us entertained, and for making us fatter! I look forward to many, many more blogs.
    Love, Dad
PS: I'm looking forward to seeing how your new wood flooring turned out.

  3. My dear "little" Lisa...I am so proud of the beautiful woman you have become! (I just cannot believe how much time has gone by!) I just LOCE reading your blogs and wish I had half of the talent that you do! I really DO love to cook, bake, and try new things out with my family! Your blog has guven me inspiration many times! If I were to win these great kitchen tools...I would definitely try my hand at making some type of homemade bread-either sweet or savory! I have not tried that, but have fon memories of my mom making homemade sweet rolls and delicious homemade crescent rolls! What an amazing aroma filled the house! Hope all is well with you!! Take care!

    1. Hi Mrs. Lane! I'm so glad you're enjoying the blog. I've been meaning to scan a couple things that Mom brought me from when I was in your class and send them to you. Apparently you were quite the inspiration to me too :) I made a few bread recipes recently and they're actually kind of fun. The hardest part is waiting for bread to rise though! Thanks for reading!

  4. Happy Birthday! I also really enjoy reading your blog because there's always something interesting. Baked goods are also my favorite food, which is why I very rarely bake! : ). But the one thing I have started doing is making more from scratch instead of using pre-packaged mixes with all kinds of extra 'stuff' in them. I've found that it doesn't take that much extra time, and so far most have tasted much better than their boxed versions. So, I'd make some homemade blueberry muffins. I also have a bag of fresh pecans Grandpa brought me, so I need to find a good nut bread recipe to try before I eat all of them raw! ~~ Aunt Audrey

    1. Thanks, Aunt Audrey! That's cool that you're doing more "scratch" cooking. You're right that it really is pretty simple. Sometimes it's just so easy to open a box of brownie mix though! I saw a cookbook the other day from America's Test Kitchen with DIY Recipes. Basically they showed you how to make a lot of kitchen "staples" from scratch. Anything from chocolate sauce to ketchup haha.

  5. I remember a year ago talking with you at the Super Bowl party about starting a blog. It's been a huge success and I love reading the posts. I think the energy bites is the recipe I use the most, but the cookie dough truffles are getting up there as well. I have always wanted to try making a cake like yours, but the fondant scares me. I will have to try that first. I didn't know there was so many uses to that "smoothing" tool... Well, congrats for making it a year and many more years to come hopefully. I can't wait to see where it takes you and what other recipes or crafts will get your site lots of traffic.

    1. Hey Shayna! I'm glad we both started blogs last year. I just wish we could actually get together more often since we live so close! You'll definitely have to try makig a fun cake sometime. Maybe start with something like the rose icing covered cakes or a ruffle cake (which I'll have on here soon :)). They're easy and fun. See you soon hopefully!

  7. Happy birthday! I love baking, and usually I'll add food coloring just because I can. Like adding green for mint chocolate chip cookies!
